Come discover the world of plant pigments! Hawai‘i being one of the most remote places in the world has a fascinating collection of plant material.
In this workshop you learn how to make your own watercolor ink with the surrounding flora. We will learn how to identify some important plants and modifiers and then make 2-3 inks from plant material foraged here on island.
Participants will have the chance to get their hands dirty with a variety of ink making and then apply the ink to paper to make their own painting or paintings. Participants will be able to leave with the extra ink we make this day so bring some extra jars.
About Janne Larsen:
Janne Larsen is an artist and educator that started on this path when her students were unable to name a single plant that grows around them. With her students, Janne began foraging to make art supplies and through many successes and failures, Ms Larsen’s botanical inks began. Janne grew up on a farm and spent countless hours roaming the woods. It is her intention with this work to create a sense of mystery and curiosity about all the plants around us in the city, and country and field. Through Ms. Larsen’s Botanical Inks and Drinks, Janne aims to foster a greater appreciation for local flora and promote sustainable practices. By turning excess produce into beautifully crafted inks and wines, she helps individuals connect with the environment in a meaningful way, contributing to a more engaged and environmentally conscious community.
